Success really is a vague, imprecise word interpreted by everyone differently. Unfortunately, some let others decide their markers for success. And for most, their own version of success changes as they grow.
Success for me used to be defined by how well I placed in various races or how a ranked in the State but that changed as I grew. I began to realize it was more important to me to see how I compared to myself, was this race faster than my last? But even that definition didn’t stick. I finally knew that the only comparison for success for me, the athlete, was how hard did I try. I’ve had unsuccessful races when hit a personal best time because I knew I could’ve done better. And I’ve had successful races when I didn’t even finish because I knew I left it all on the course. The only thing I could control is my effort so success became an internal barometer and was independent of the results.
Why should life be any different?
Success does not always mean having the most money or the most followers or the most likes or fastest car. Success is an internal goal based on what you can control. Not everyone is given the same tools to start this game of life so not everyone has the ability and capability to reach the same level of external success. But everyone has the ability to do the best they can do with what they are given…and only the individual can answer that.
And just when you figure out what defines your version of success, you will realize that failure is an integral part of success! To quote Daymond John, “Failure is just learning a smarter way to start over again.”
So go out there and try…whatever the goal you’re striving to achieve. Try and you will be successful in your own right!
